Quick Answer

Trade the firm's capital on forex, indices and metals — keep most of the profit

A CFD funded account is a simulated live account you unlock by passing a prop firm's evaluation. You trade contracts for difference — forex pairs, indices like US30, gold, oil — with a profit target and a drawdown limit instead of your own cash at risk. Pass, and you trade a funded account where the firm pays you 80–95% of the profits you generate. Your maximum real-world loss is the evaluation fee, which is the entire appeal.

How a CFD funded account works, start to finish

1. You buy an evaluation

You pay a one-off fee for a simulated evaluation account at a chosen size — $5k to $200k is the typical range. The fee is your only real money at risk.

2. You trade to a profit target

Hit the target (often 5–10%) without breaking the daily loss limit or overall drawdown. One-step, two-step and instant models package this differently.

3. You get the funded account

Pass, and the firm issues a simulated live account. Your trades are mirrored against the firm's risk book, and your performance is tracked for payouts.

4. You withdraw the profit split

Request payouts on the firm's schedule — weekly, bi-weekly or on-demand depending on the model — and receive 80–95% of the simulated profit as real money.

The detail most beginners miss: the funded account is also simulated. You are not a brokerage client of the firm — you are under a performance agreement. The firm tracks your trades and pays you a contractually agreed share of the results. That is why payout proof and rule transparency matter more than a slick dashboard.

CFD funding vs futures funding: the real differences

I trade futures funding myself — FundedNext, Tradeify and Apex on the futures side — but the CFD model suits different traders. Here is the honest comparison:

The rules that actually decide whether you get paid

The profit target is the headline. These are the rules that quietly fail most traders:

Daily loss limit

Lose more than the daily allowance — often 3–5% of the starting balance — and the account is gone, even if you are up overall. Some firms calculate it from balance, some from equity, some from the day's starting equity. Know which.

Overall drawdown

Static drawdown stays fixed at a set level below the starting balance. Trailing drawdown follows your equity high until it locks. Static is far more forgiving for swing traders.

News and weekend restrictions

Many CFD evaluations ban trading around high-impact news and require positions flat before the weekend. A gold trade held through NFP can end an otherwise passing account.

Consistency rules

Some models cap how much of your total profit can come from a single day. One lucky full-margin trade can pass the target and still fail the consistency check.

The hidden costs of CFD funded trading

What you expect
  • The evaluation fee — your maximum real loss
  • The spread on every entry and exit
  • Commissions on some account models
What surprises people
  • Swaps compounding on multi-day swing trades
  • Widened spreads during news and low liquidity
  • Slippage on stop-outs in fast markets
  • Reset fees after a breach

Swaps deserve emphasis: if your edge is holding gold or indices for days, model the swap cost into the trade before you enter. On some instruments a week of holding quietly removes a third of a good move.

Who a CFD funded account is actually for

Good fit: forex and gold traders with a proven strategy, swing traders who need larger stop distances than index futures allow, and traders outside US futures market hours who want liquid Asian and London session products.

Poor fit: pure NQ/ES scalpers (futures funding has tighter pricing for that), anyone without a backtested edge, and traders hoping the leverage will substitute for risk management. The leverage is a margin feature, not a sizing strategy — the drawdown is always the real limit.

How to pick a CFD prop firm without getting burned

The CFD prop industry has a higher failure rate than futures — more firms launch, and more quietly disappear. My filter, in order:

  • Payout proof first. Public, recent, verifiable withdrawals by real traders. No proof, no purchase. My own payout receipts live on the payout proof page.
  • Written rulebook. News, weekend, consistency and drawdown rules published in full before you pay — not "contact support" answers.
  • Sane economics. A firm selling $200k accounts for the price of a dinner with an 8% target and 100% split is selling resets, not funding.
  • Payout cadence. How often can you withdraw, what is the minimum, and how fast do they actually process?

CFD Funded Account FAQ

What is a CFD funded account?+

A CFD funded account is a simulated live account a prop firm gives you after you pass its evaluation. You trade contracts for difference on forex pairs, indices, metals, oil and sometimes crypto with the firm's capital allocation, and you withdraw a share of the profits you generate — typically 80% to 95% depending on the firm and account model.

How is a CFD funded account different from a futures funded account?+

Futures accounts trade exchange-listed contracts (ES, NQ, CL) with centralized pricing and fixed commissions. CFD accounts trade over-the-counter contracts priced by the broker, with costs built into the spread plus swaps for holding overnight. CFD firms also tend to allow much higher leverage, smaller position granularity, and a wider product range including forex pairs.

Do CFD prop firms pay real money?+

Legitimate CFD prop firms pay real withdrawals from their own funds based on your simulated performance — the model is closer to a performance contract than a brokerage account. Payout proof matters more than marketing here: only trade firms with a public track record of paying traders, and check recent payout reports before buying an evaluation.

What does a CFD evaluation actually test?+

Most models test one thing: can you hit a profit target without breaching a daily loss limit or an overall drawdown. Some models split that into two phases with a lower target in phase two. A few firms offer one-step or instant funding with tighter rules instead. The target and drawdown numbers matter less than the trading rules around news, weekends and consistency.

What are swaps on a CFD funded account?+

A swap is the overnight financing charge for holding a CFD position past the daily rollover. On funded accounts swaps come out of your simulated balance just like real trading. Swing traders holding positions for days need to check swap rates — on some instruments they can quietly eat a chunk of a good trade.

Can I hold trades over the weekend on a CFD funded account?+

It depends on the account model. Many CFD evaluations require all positions flat before the weekend close because crypto and forex gaps can blow through a drawdown while you cannot react. Some funded-stage accounts allow weekend holding. Always check the specific rule for the exact account you are buying.

Is news trading allowed on CFD funded accounts?+

Rules vary by firm and by stage. Common setups: no opening or closing trades within a few minutes of high-impact news during the evaluation, with looser rules once funded — or a hard ban throughout. If your strategy relies on trading CPI or NFP spikes, verify the news rule before paying for an evaluation.

How much leverage do CFD prop firms give?+

Typical ranges are 1:50 to 1:100 on forex majors, less on indices, metals and crypto. Higher leverage is not automatically better — it mostly determines margin requirements, while your real risk ceiling is the daily loss limit and max drawdown. Size your positions off the drawdown, not the leverage.

What profit split do CFD prop firms offer?+

Most competitive CFD firms pay 80% to 90%, with some models scaling up to 95% after milestones. A headline 100% split usually comes with strings — a cap, a limited window, or stricter rules elsewhere. Compare the split together with payout frequency and minimum withdrawal rules.

How do I choose a CFD prop firm?+

Start with payout proof and rule transparency, then compare drawdown type, news and weekend rules, swap costs and payout speed. My ranked breakdown of the firms I would actually trade is in the best CFD prop firms guide.
