Searching for a trading mentor puts you in front of the most aggressively marketed corner of the internet. Nearly everyone in the results is selling something, and a large share of them make more money from teaching than from trading. That does not mean mentorship is worthless — it means the only useful skill is separating people who trade real size from people who film themselves near cars.

Quick Answer

How do you find a trading mentor who actually trades?

Demand three proofs before you pay: dated withdrawals from a real broker or prop firm, live execution you can watch during market hours with the stop visible, and free access long enough to judge them — weeks, not a 20-minute webinar. Anyone who trades will show all three without being asked twice. Then pay monthly, never for a lifetime package.

What a Mentor Actually Sells (and It Isn't Setups)

The fantasy is that somewhere out there is a setup you don't have. The reality is that entry techniques are freely available and largely interchangeable. What almost nobody has when they start is a fast, honest feedback loop.

Alone, you discover that your sizing is wrong after four failed evaluations and six months. With someone competent watching your trades in real time, you discover it in a week and it costs you one conversation. That compression — not secret knowledge — is the entire product.

Which means you should evaluate a mentor on how quickly and specifically they can tell you what you are doing wrong, not on how impressive their charts look.

The Six Proof Checks

Run all six before money changes hands. This table is the whole article if you are in a hurry:

CheckWhat good looks likeFail signal
Dated withdrawal proofMultiple payouts across months, shown inside the firm's own payout screenOne cropped screenshot, no dates, unrealised P&L only
Live trading during market hoursScreen shared before the entry, with the stop visibleRecaps posted after the close, entries revealed afterwards
Losing days shownRed days posted as openly as green onesAn unbroken wall of winners
A named processOne instrument, one session, defined invalidationA different 'strategy' every week, indicator soup
Free surface areaPublic stream or free community you can watch for weeks before payingEverything behind a paywall, DMs to 'discuss pricing'
Honest pricingMonthly, cancel anytime, trial availableLifetime deal, countdown timer, 'last 3 spots'

Apply them to me too. My dated withdrawals are on the payout proof page, I trade live on the daily stream, and the free Discord costs nothing to sit in for a month before you decide anything. If a mentor cannot give you an equivalent list, that is your answer.

Five Mentor Archetypes You'll Meet

Almost everyone offering mentorship falls into one of these. Knowing which one you are talking to saves a lot of money:

ArchetypeThe tellVerdict
The active traderTrades live daily, shows payouts, teaches while positionedWorth paying for — you are buying real-time feedback
The signal sellerPosts entries and targets, no reasoning, no risk frameworkAvoid — you learn nothing you can repeat alone
The course funnelCheap front-end product, upsells to a four-figure packageAvoid — the business is selling, not trading
The retired analystDeep market knowledge, no live execution in yearsUseful for context, weak on execution and sizing
The peer groupSeveral traders at a similar level reviewing each otherUnderrated and usually free — start here

The broader landscape — rooms, courses, one-to-one coaching and what each format is actually good for — is covered in my honest guide to trading mentorship, and the room-by-room comparison lives in best live trading rooms.

Red Flags That End the Conversation

Walk away immediately
  • Guaranteed win rates, guaranteed funding, or "we'll pass your evaluation for you".
  • Profit screenshots that show floating P&L instead of completed withdrawals.
  • Prices that only exist for the next 24 hours — every 24 hours.
  • No losing days anywhere in months of content.
  • Selling signals while calling it mentorship.
  • Pressure into a lifetime package before you've watched a single live session.
  • Advice to size up to "recover" after a losing day.

That last one matters more than it sounds. A mentor's response to your losing day tells you everything: a real trader shrinks your risk, a salesman tells you to push. The mechanics of why pushing kills accounts are in risk of ruin and position sizing.

What Fair Pricing Looks Like

Ranges vary, but the structure matters more than the number. Monthly and cancel-anytime keeps the mentor exposed to your results; large upfront packages remove that exposure entirely.

  • Free communities. Fine as a starting point and genuinely useful for accountability. Costs nothing to test.
  • Live rooms and mentorship groups. Typically a modest monthly subscription. You are buying daily live execution and being able to ask questions while a trade is open.
  • One-to-one coaching. The most expensive format, and only worth it once you already have data on your own trading to review.
  • Lifetime packages. Structurally bad. Once paid, the mentor has no ongoing reason to care.

A useful frame: compare the monthly cost against a single failed evaluation fee. If mentorship prevents one blown account a quarter, it has paid for itself. If it can't plausibly do that, it's entertainment.

How to Test a Mentor in 30 Days

Week 1
Watch, pay nothing

Sit in the free stream or community. Note whether losing days appear and whether calls are made before or after the move.

Week 2
Ask one specific question

Bring a real trade of yours. A useful mentor critiques your sizing and invalidation in two sentences. A salesman answers with an offer.

Week 3
Trade their process, small

One instrument, one session, micros only. You are testing whether their process is teachable, not whether it prints.

Week 4
Judge on behaviour change

Not on P&L — one month is noise. Did your worst day get smaller and your rule breaks get rarer? Those are the only honest month-one metrics.

If the answer to week four is no, cancel without guilt. Mentors are a tool, not a relationship you owe anything to.

What a Mentor Can't Do For You

Nobody can install discipline. A mentor can hand you a sizing table, a session rule and a daily loss cap — the same ones I lay out in how to pass a prop firm evaluation — but they cannot make you close the platform after your third stop.

They also can't shortcut screen time. Pattern recognition is a repetition problem, and the only variable a mentor controls is how expensive each repetition is.

And they can't fix a firm choice that fights your style. If your drawdown trails your intraday high, no amount of coaching makes holding winners comfortable — read static vs trailing vs EOD drawdown and pick the structure that matches how you trade. My ranked list of the firms that have actually paid me is in best futures prop firms.

How I'd Do It With Zero Budget

If you have no money to spend, this path gets you most of the benefit:

  1. Join two or three free communities and lurk for a month before speaking.
  2. Follow one live trader and watch only the sessions you intend to trade.
  3. Keep a written log of every trade with the reason for entry and exit — this is the single highest-return habit in trading.
  4. Find one peer at your level and swap logs weekly. Free, and brutally effective.
  5. Only pay for mentorship once you can name the specific problem you want solved.

A shortlist of communities worth lurking in is in best trading Discord servers and day trading Discord servers.

Trading Mentor FAQ

How do I find a trading mentor who actually trades?+

Ask for three things before you pay anything: dated payout or brokerage statements, live screen-shared trading during real market hours, and a public track record you can follow for a few weeks for free. A mentor who genuinely trades can produce all three in minutes. One who mainly sells education will redirect you to testimonials instead.

Is a trading mentor worth it?+

A good one is worth it for one reason: it compresses the feedback loop. Learning alone, you find out a habit is costing you money after six months and several blown evaluations. With someone watching your trades in real time you find out the same week. That is the whole value — not secret setups.

How much should a trading mentor cost?+

Live rooms and mentorship communities typically run somewhere between $50 and $200 a month, and one-to-one coaching runs far higher. Be very careful with four-figure lifetime packages: the incentive flips from helping you trade to closing the next sale. Monthly, cancel-anytime pricing keeps the mentor accountable.

What are the biggest red flags in a trading mentor?+

Rented-car and watch imagery, screenshots of unrealised profit rather than withdrawals, guaranteed win rates, urgency discounts that never expire, signals sold as a strategy, and no visible losing days. Any single one of those is enough to walk away.

Should I pay for signals or for mentorship?+

Mentorship. Signals give you someone else's trades without their context, so you copy the entry and not the exit, and you learn nothing transferable. The only durable outcome is being able to trade your own plan without supervision, which signals actively prevent.

Can a trading mentor guarantee I become profitable?+

No, and anyone claiming otherwise is disqualifying themselves. A mentor controls the quality of the feedback you get, not your discipline, your risk tolerance or your time in the seat. Most of the improvement comes from you doing boring things consistently.

Do I need a mentor to pass a prop firm evaluation?+

No. Plenty of traders pass with a clear risk plan and no mentor at all. What a mentor helps with is speed and cost — fewer failed evaluation fees while you work out sizing and session discipline. The maths of passing is public and free.

How do I verify a mentor's payout screenshots?+

Look for dates, the firm's own payout interface, the payment processor, and a history of multiple withdrawals rather than one big number. Then cross-check against live streams from the same dates. A single cropped screenshot with no date proves nothing.

What should I expect in the first month with a mentor?+

Mostly subtraction. A decent mentor removes instruments, sessions and setups from your routine before adding anything, and puts hard caps on your daily loss. If your first month is full of new indicators, you have hired an entertainer.

Is a free trading Discord good enough instead of a paid mentor?+

For many traders, yes — at least initially. A free community gives you accountability, other people's mistakes to learn from, and a way to watch how someone trades before paying anything. Start free, and only pay once you know exactly which problem you are paying to solve.
