The short answer

A prop firm — short for proprietary trading firm — is a company that lets you trade its capital instead of your own. You pay for an evaluation, prove you can hit a profit target without breaking the drawdown rules, and then trade a funded account where you keep most of the profit — usually 80% to 95%. There is no interview, no employment contract and no need for your own trading capital beyond the fee. Your only real risk is the cost of the evaluation.

What a prop firm is (and is not)

Traditional proprietary trading firms hired traders onto a desk and gave them firm capital, a salary and a boss. That still exists, but it is not what people mean online in 2026. Today retail prop firm means a remote evaluation business: you buy a challenge, trade to a rulebook, and get funded if you pass.

A prop firm is not a broker, not a signals service, and not a way to avoid learning to trade. It solves exactly one problem — capital — and it charges you a fee plus a profit split for solving it. Everything else is still on you.

What it gives you
  • Buying power far beyond your own account size
  • Capped downside — you can only lose the fee
  • A defined rulebook and profit target
  • Scaling paths and multiple accounts
What it does not give you
  • A strategy or an edge
  • A salary or job security
  • Freedom from rules — you trade to theirs
  • Any guarantee of a payout

How prop firm funding works, stage by stage

Every futures prop firm I have traded follows the same four stages. The names change; the mechanics do not.

1You buy an evaluation

A monthly or one-time fee gives you a simulated account with a profit target and a drawdown limit. This fee — not your losses — is the firm's main revenue.

2You hit the target without breaching

Reach the profit target while staying inside the drawdown and any consistency or news rules. Most failures come from the drawdown type, not the target.

3You get a funded account

Sometimes live capital, often still simulated with your trades copied to the firm's live desk. Either way your payouts are real money.

4You withdraw a profit split

Typically 80–95% of profits to you, on a cadence ranging from daily to bi-weekly depending on the firm and whether you have cleared a threshold.

The full walkthrough with real numbers is in how to become a funded trader and how to pass a prop firm evaluation.

How prop firms make money

This is the part most explainers skip, and it is the part that tells you which firms to trust. Revenue comes from three places:

Evaluation and reset fees

The dominant revenue line. Most people who buy a challenge never pass, so fees alone can sustain the business. That is also the conflict of interest you need to price in.

The profit split

The firm keeps 5–20% of what funded traders make. Firms that genuinely want long-term funded traders lean on this line, which is why their rules tend to be more workable.

Commissions and flow arrangements

Round-turn commissions inside the funded account, and at some firms, routing arrangements with the broker or clearing side.

The practical filter: a firm with clean, published rules and verifiable recent payouts is monetising traders who succeed. My own withdrawals are on the payout proof page, and I explain the legitimacy question in full in are prop firms legit.

The four rules that decide everything

Beginners compare prices. Funded traders compare rules. These four decide whether your strategy can survive at a given firm:

The four prop firm rules that matter most and why
RuleWhat it meansWhy it matters
Drawdown typeStatic, end-of-day trailing, or intraday trailingCauses more failed evaluations than any other rule
Daily loss limitA hard stop on how much you can lose in one sessionEnds recoverable days; some firms have none at all
Consistency ruleCaps how much of total profit one day may representCan block a payout even while you are profitable
Payout termsCadence, minimum withdrawal and profit splitDecides how fast trading becomes actual income

Deep dives: static vs trailing drawdown, the consistency rule and how long payouts take.

Futures, CFD and crypto prop firms

"Prop firm" covers several different products. The rules and risks are not interchangeable:

Futures prop firms

Fund you on exchange-traded contracts such as ES, NQ and their micros. Transparent tick values, regulated exchange pricing, clear session hours. This is what I trade.

CFD prop firms

Fund forex, indices and metals through a broker-side product. Higher leverage, different rule language, and quality varies more widely between operators.

Crypto prop firms

Fund crypto pairs, usually with 24/7 sessions and wider volatility allowances. A niche worth knowing if crypto is genuinely your market.

What it actually costs to try

An evaluation is priced per month or as a one-off, and promos rotate constantly. The number that matters is not the sticker price — it is fee × the number of resets your strategy causes under that firm's rules. A cheap account under a drawdown model that fights your style is the most expensive option on the market.

Current promos live on the prop firm deals page, the honest pricing maths is in cheapest prop firms, and every live code is tracked in prop firm discount codes.

Is a prop firm right for you?

Yes, if you have a tested process

You already have a strategy with recorded results and you simply lack capital. That is exactly the problem prop funding solves.

Not yet, if you are still learning

Sim first. Paper trading and a live room cost far less than repeated evaluation fees while you are still finding an edge.

Never, as a lottery ticket

Buying the biggest account you can afford and hoping is the fastest way to donate fees. Start small, get one payout, then scale.

If you are in the "not yet" bucket, start with paper trading futures and futures trading for beginners, then come back to evaluations with an actual process.

What Is a Prop Firm? FAQ

What is a prop firm?+

A prop firm (proprietary trading firm) is a company that lets traders trade its capital instead of their own. You pay for an evaluation, prove you can hit a profit target without breaking the drawdown rules, and then trade a funded account where you keep most of the profits - typically 80% to 95%. Modern retail futures prop firms like FundedNext, Tradeify and Apex run this model online with no interview and no job contract.

How do prop firms make money?+

Mostly from evaluation and reset fees, plus their share of trader profits and, at some firms, order-flow or commission arrangements. This is why rules matter: a firm whose fees depend on failures will have tighter rules than one that wants long-term funded traders. Payout proof is the fastest way to tell which kind you are dealing with.

Is prop firm trading legit?+

The established firms are legitimate businesses that pay traders - I publish my own withdrawals on the payout proof page. The industry also contains firms with unclear rulebooks and slow payouts, which is why you should verify recent payout evidence and read the drawdown rules before buying anything.

Do you need your own money to trade at a prop firm?+

Only the evaluation fee, which usually ranges from tens to a few hundred dollars per month depending on account size and current promos. You are not risking your own trading capital beyond that fee, and you cannot lose more than it.

What is the difference between a prop firm and a broker?+

A broker gives you market access for your own money and you keep 100% of profits and losses. A prop firm gives you access to its capital under a rulebook, and you split the profits. You still trade through a platform such as Tradovate or NinjaTrader inside the prop firm's account.

What rules do prop firms have?+

The four that decide everything: drawdown type (static, end-of-day trailing or intraday trailing), whether a daily loss limit exists, consistency rules that cap how much of your profit can come from one day, and news or overnight restrictions. Price is a distant fifth.

How long does it take to get funded?+

Some firms allow a pass in as little as a handful of profitable days; realistically most traders need weeks to months, and many need more than one attempt. Anyone promising a specific timeline is guessing - the honest answer is that it takes as long as your process needs.

Are futures prop firms different from CFD prop firms?+

Yes. Futures firms fund you on exchange-traded contracts like ES, NQ and their micros with clear tick values and hours. CFD prop firms fund forex, indices and metals via a broker-side product, with different leverage and rule structures. I compare the CFD side separately in my best CFD prop firms guide.

What is the best prop firm for beginners?+

One with an end-of-day drawdown, no daily loss limit and a small account size, so a single bad open does not end your evaluation. FundedNext Futures and Tradeify fit that description best right now - see my ranked comparison for the full detail, and always confirm the current rulebook.

Do prop firms offer discount codes?+

Almost all of them, and promos rotate constantly. Code SATO gets the best available discount at my partner firms - FundedNext, Tradeify and Apex - and the prop firm discount codes guide tracks what is currently live.
