Micro futures trading is how almost every funded trader I know actually started. The Micro E-minis — MES, MNQ, MYM and M2K — are exact 1/10-scale versions of the E-mini contracts, so you learn the same order flow, the same levels and the same discipline at one tenth of the cost of being wrong.

Quick Answer

What is micro futures trading?

Micro futures are CME contracts sized at 1/10 of the E-minis: MES (S&P 500, $1.25/tick), MNQ (Nasdaq-100, $0.50/tick), MYM (Dow, $0.50/tick) and M2K (Russell 2000, $0.50/tick). They share the same tick size, hours and underlying index as their E-mini parents, but need roughly $50–$150 intraday margin instead of $500–$1,500. Trade micros until your expectancy is provably positive, then size up.

Key Takeaways
  • 10 micros = 1 E-mini in exposure — identical P&L, higher commissions.
  • MES and MNQ carry the liquidity. MYM and M2K are thinner.
  • Micro margin of ~$50–$150 makes small evaluations workable.
  • Micros let you scale in and out in 10% steps — ideal under consistency rules.
  • Every major prop firm supports all four — limits scale with account size.
  • Consolidate to the E-mini at 10 micros to cut commission drag.

The Four Micro Futures Contracts, Side by Side

All four Micro E-minis launched to give retail traders access to index futures without $200K–$400K of notional exposure per lot. They are cash-settled, quarterly, and trade on CME Globex alongside their full-size parents.

Which Micro Should You Trade?

Liquidity and personality matter more than tick value. Here's how I'd rank them for a trader building expectancy on a funded account:

  • MES — deepest micro book, tightest spread, slowest personality. Best first contract. A 10-point stop costs $12.50.
  • MNQ — the volatility play. Bigger daily point range, cleaner trends, but a routine 40-point swing is $80 per contract. Great once your stops are disciplined.
  • MYM — 1-point ticks make the ladder readable, but the Dow is a 30-stock index that can be dragged by one name. Thinner book than MES/MNQ.
  • M2K — small-cap beta, genuinely thin outside RTH. Only worth it if you specifically trade the Russell.

My default: learn on MES, and add MNQ once you can hold a stop without flinching. Trading two correlated index micros at once is just leveraged sizing with extra steps.

Micro Futures Margin and Real Capital Requirements

CME sets initial margin; brokers and prop firms set a lower day-trade margin that is what actually gates your sizing intraday.

ContractTypical intraday marginE-mini equivalent
MES~$40 – $150ES ~$400 – $1,500
MNQ~$50 – $150NQ ~$500 – $1,500
MYM~$40 – $120YM ~$400 – $1,200
M2K~$40 – $120RTY ~$400 – $1,200

Ranges are indicative and vary by firm, platform and time of day — day-trade margin flips to full overnight margin before the close. Always confirm current rates with your firm.

The honest capital answer: you can trade one micro in a $2,500 live account, but one bad week wipes a meaningful chunk of it. A prop firm evaluation costs a fraction of that and enforces the risk rules you'd otherwise ignore. That's the path I took — how to get a funded trading account.

Position Sizing Micros on a Funded Account

The whole point of micros on an evaluation is that they let you express a real setup without a single stop consuming your drawdown. Work backwards from the drawdown, never forwards from conviction.

AccountTypical drawdown1% riskMES size (8-pt stop)
$25K~$1,500~$15 – $301 MES ($40 stop) — widen or skip
$50K~$2,500~$25 – $501 MES ($40 stop)
$100K~$3,000~$30 – $601 – 2 MES
$150K~$5,000~$50 – $1002 – 3 MES

Drawdown figures vary by firm and plan — check the current rulebook. The structural point holds regardless: on a trailing-drawdown account, an 8-point MES stop is $40, and you should be able to take five of those in a row and still be trading. If you can't, you're too big.

Micros and the Consistency Rule

Most firms cap how much of your total profit can come from one day. Micros are the cleanest tool for staying inside that band, because they let you scale exposure in 10% increments rather than doubling from one contract to two.

A trader running 1 ES who wants to take a little more risk has to go to 2 ES — a 100% jump. A trader running 10 MES can go to 12 MES, a 20% jump. That granularity is why I still trade micros on accounts where I could size much larger. Full breakdown: the prop firm consistency rule.

Commission Drag: When Micros Stop Being Cheap

Micros are cheaper per contract and more expensive per unit of exposure. Assuming roughly $1.00 round-turn on a micro and $4.00 on an E-mini (real numbers vary by firm and platform):

100 trades1 MES5 MES10 MES1 ES
Commissions~$100~$500~$1,000~$400
Exposure0.1x0.5x1x1x

The crossover is clear: at ten micros you're paying roughly 2.5× the commission for identical exposure. Below five micros, the granularity is worth the drag. At ten, consolidate.

Mistakes I See With Micro Futures

Avoid these
  • "It's only micros" sizing. Eight MNQ with a 40-point stop is a $320 loser. The word "micro" is not a risk-management strategy.
  • Treating micros as a practice mode. Real money on the line is the point. Journal every micro trade exactly as you would an E-mini trade, or the expectancy data is worthless.
  • Trading M2K or MYM overnight. The books thin out badly outside RTH and your fills reflect it.
  • Mixing micros and E-minis in one account. Calculating drawdown headroom mid-session becomes guesswork. One instrument class per account, per session.
  • Ignoring overnight margin flips. Sizing that clears at 10:30 ET may be rejected at 15:55 ET.

Scaling Micros Across Multiple Funded Accounts

Once you're consistently green on one account, micros become a distribution tool. A single signal copied at 3 MES per account across five funded accounts is 1.5 ES of aggregate exposure, spread across five different drawdown buffers — no single account carries the full hit when a trade goes wrong.

That's exactly how I scale. Scaling prop firm accounts with copy trading walks through the setup, and /payout-proof shows the receipts from running it.

Micro Futures Trading FAQ

What is micro futures trading?+

Micro futures trading means trading the CME Micro E-mini contracts — MES (S&P 500), MNQ (Nasdaq-100), MYM (Dow) and M2K (Russell 2000) — which are sized at 1/10 of their E-mini equivalents. Same index, same tick size, same market hours, one tenth of the dollars per tick and one tenth of the margin.

What are the four main micro futures contracts?+

MES ($5 × S&P 500, $1.25 per tick), MNQ ($2 × Nasdaq-100, $0.50 per tick), MYM ($0.50 × Dow, $0.50 per tick) and M2K ($5 × Russell 2000, $0.50 per tick). MES and MNQ carry the vast majority of retail and prop-firm volume.

How much money do you need to trade micro futures?+

Intraday day-trade margin on a micro is typically $50–$150 per contract, so a retail account of $2,000–$3,000 can technically trade one micro. In practice, most traders start on a prop firm evaluation instead — a $50K eval costs far less than funding a live account and the drawdown rules force disciplined sizing.

Are micro futures good for beginners?+

Yes — micros are the single best beginner instrument in futures. The execution, order flow and psychology are identical to the E-minis, but a 10-point mistake on MES costs $12.50 instead of $125. You learn the same lessons at one tenth of the tuition.

What is the tick value of MES vs MNQ?+

MES ticks in 0.25 index points worth $1.25 each ($5 per full point). MNQ ticks in 0.25 index points worth $0.50 each ($2 per full point). MNQ moves far more points per session, so the daily dollar range on both is closer than the tick values suggest.

Can you trade micro futures on prop firm accounts?+

Yes. Apex Trader Funding, Tradeify, FundedNext Futures and every other major futures prop firm support MES, MNQ, MYM and M2K on evaluations and funded accounts. Micros usually count as a fraction of a full contract against your position limit — check each firm's rulebook for the exact ratio.

How many micros equal one E-mini?+

Ten. 10 MES = 1 ES, 10 MNQ = 1 NQ, 10 MYM = 1 YM, 10 M2K = 1 RTY. Exposure and P&L are identical; the only difference is commission drag, which is higher on ten micros than on one E-mini.

Are micro futures cheaper than E-minis?+

Per contract, yes — lower margin, lower dollars per tick, lower cost per round turn. Per unit of exposure, no: ten micros usually cost more in commissions than one E-mini. Below roughly five micros, stay in micros; at ten, consolidate into the E-mini.

What are micro futures trading hours?+

Micros trade the same schedule as their E-mini parents: Sunday 6:00pm ET through Friday 5:00pm ET, with a daily maintenance break from 5:00pm to 6:00pm ET. Liquidity is deepest during the US cash session, 9:30am–4:00pm ET.

When should I move from micros to E-minis?+

Two conditions, both required. First, positive expectancy over at least 40–60 trading days on the micro. Second, one E-mini of risk fits inside your account's daily loss limit and drawdown with genuine headroom. If you are routinely trading ten micros, the sizing is already an E-mini — consolidate and save the commissions.
