Disclosure: Topstep is not a SATO Trades partner and I earn nothing if you sign up there — this is objective coverage. The alternative firms mentioned (FundedNext, Tradeify, Apex) are partners, and code SATO may earn me a commission at no extra cost to you. Trial availability and terms change constantly; Topstep's own site is the final word.

The short answer

The Topstep free trial is a short, simulated preview of the Trading Combine — same platform, same drawdown, same daily loss limit — offered on and off through the year. It is genuinely useful for one thing: finding out whether you can trade inside a hard daily loss limit. It does not count toward funding, does not produce a withdrawable payout, and does not shorten the paid evaluation. If you already know the rules suit you, a discounted one-time evaluation elsewhere gets you to a funded account faster and cheaper than a trial plus a monthly subscription.

What the Topstep free trial actually includes

Trial terms rotate with Topstep's promotions, but the shape has been consistent: you get the environment and the rules, not the outcome.

What is and is not included in the Topstep free trial
FeatureIncludedWhat it means for you
Simulated Trading Combine environmentYesYou trade the same simulated account structure Topstep uses for its paid evaluation.
Live market data on supported platformsUsuallyData entitlements vary by platform and region — confirm before you assume real-time feeds.
The real rule set (drawdown, daily loss limit)YesThis is the genuinely useful part: you find out fast whether the daily loss limit fits you.
Progress that counts toward fundingNoTrial performance does not convert into a funded account. You still have to buy and pass a Combine.
Payout eligibilityNoNothing you make in a trial is withdrawable. It is a rules simulator, not an earning path.

Trial availability, length and data entitlements change with each promotion — verify current terms on Topstep's own signup page before entering payment details.

The one question a trial is good at answering

Topstep's defining rule is the daily loss limit. Hit it and your day ends, regardless of how good your setup looks an hour later. Most traders who fail Topstep repeatedly do not fail on the profit target — they fail because a normal drawdown day gets converted into a hard stop.

A trial answers that in a week for nothing. Trade your actual strategy, at your actual size, and count how many days you would have been ended. If the answer is more than one in ten, the monthly subscription model is going to be expensive for you, and my Topstep pricing breakdown shows exactly how the bill compounds month over month.

If you are unsure how the drawdown behaves alongside that limit, read static vs trailing drawdown first — the interaction between the two is what actually blows accounts.

Official Tradeify Partner

Skip the trial if you already know your rules

Tradeify charges a one-time evaluation fee instead of a recurring subscription, runs an end-of-day drawdown, and has no hard daily loss limit on its core plans. Code SATO gets the best available discount.

Free trial vs discounted evaluation: which is the better spend?

Take the trial if…
  • You have never traded under a hard daily loss limit
  • You are new to futures and still sizing your risk
  • You want to test the platform before committing
  • You will actually diary the cancellation date
Skip it if…
  • You have already passed an evaluation somewhere
  • You know a daily loss limit does not fit your strategy
  • You want funded capital this month, not practice
  • You would rather put the same days into a real, discounted evaluation

The trap is treating a trial as progress. Days spent in a simulator that cannot convert are days not spent on an evaluation that can. If you have the discipline already, buy a discounted evaluation and start the clock that actually pays.

Cheaper ways to test a funded ruleset for free

Replicate the rules in paper trading

Set a manual daily loss limit and a trailing drawdown in any sim platform and trade it for two weeks. Same behavioural test, no signup, and you can model any firm's rules — not just Topstep's.

Trade the giveaway accounts

I fund and give away real evaluation and funded accounts on stream every week. That is a genuinely free route to a live ruleset, paid for by me rather than by you.

Buy the cheapest real evaluation

A heavily discounted one-time evaluation often costs less than one month of a subscription, and unlike a trial it can end with a funded account and a payout.

Details of the weekly draws are on the giveaways page, and if raw cost is your constraint, my cheapest prop firms breakdown ranks firms by cost per funded account rather than by headline discount.

My verdict on the Topstep trial

Honest take: the trial is a fair, low-pressure way to meet the rules, and Topstep is a legitimate long-running firm — I say the same in my Topstep review and in is Topstep legit. But a trial is a test, not a shortcut, and it does not change the economics of the monthly subscription that follows.

If the trial teaches you that the daily loss limit does not suit your trading, the right next step is not another trial — it is a firm without one. My Topstep alternatives guide ranks the seven I would actually move to, and Topstep vs Apex covers the most common switch head to head.

Topstep Free Trial FAQ

Does Topstep have a free trial in 2026?+

Topstep periodically offers a free trial of the Trading Combine environment, and it also runs frequent discount promotions that function as a cheap first month. Availability rotates, so the trial is not guaranteed to be live when you look. Check Topstep's own site for what is currently offered rather than relying on any third-party page, including this one.

How long is the Topstep free trial?+

When offered, trials have typically run for a short window measured in days rather than a full evaluation cycle. That is long enough to learn whether the daily loss limit suits your style, and not long enough to complete a real evaluation.

Can you get funded from the Topstep free trial?+

No. A trial is a simulated preview of the Combine environment. Funding requires buying and passing an actual Trading Combine, then clearing the funded-account requirements. Nothing earned in a trial is withdrawable.

Do you need a credit card for the Topstep free trial?+

Trial signups generally require an account and, depending on the promotion, payment details that convert to a paid subscription when the trial ends. If you do not want to be billed, diary the end date and cancel before it rolls over.

Is the Topstep free trial worth it?+

It is worth it for exactly one purpose: testing whether you can trade inside a hard daily loss limit. That single question decides how many months a Topstep Combine will cost you. It is not worth treating as a path to funding, because it is not one.

What is the difference between a Topstep free trial and a discounted Combine?+

A trial costs nothing and leads nowhere. A discounted Combine costs money and can actually get you funded. If you already know the rules fit your strategy, the discounted Combine is the better spend — a trial only postpones the same decision.

Are there free prop firm challenges elsewhere?+

Some firms run free challenge promotions, and communities give funded accounts away. I stream weekly giveaways where the accounts are paid for by me, not by you — details on the giveaways page. Beyond that, no legitimate firm gives away funded capital with no evaluation at all.

Can I practice the Topstep rules without a trial?+

Yes, and it is often better. Set your own hard daily loss limit and trailing drawdown in a normal paper-trading platform and trade it for two weeks. You get the same behavioural test without a subscription clock or a signup, and you can replicate any firm's rules, not just Topstep's.

What happens when the Topstep trial ends?+

Access to the trial environment stops and, if the promotion was card-backed, the paid subscription typically begins. Cancel before the rollover date if you do not intend to continue.

Which firms are cheaper than Topstep after the trial?+

FundedNext Futures, Tradeify and Apex Trader Funding all use one-time evaluation fees with regular promotions instead of a recurring monthly subscription, and none of the three applies a hard daily loss limit on their core plans. Code SATO gets the best available discount at all three.
