Best NinjaTrader Indicators for Futures
A short, practical list for ES and NQ—what each indicator answers, which need Order Flow+, and how to avoid a cluttered chart.

I don’t use NinjaTrader day to day: I execute through TradingView connected to Tradovate and read orderflow in ExoCharts. This guide relies on NinjaTrader’s own documentation and general futures practice. No NinjaTrader partnership. SATO VIP is my own paid service.
The most useful NinjaTrader indicators for futures day trading are VWAP, a volume profile, cumulative delta or volumetric (footprint) bars, ATR and prior-day reference levels. The order-flow versions—Volumetric Bars, Cumulative Delta, Volume Profile and Order Flow VWAP—are Order Flow+ studies, included with a lifetime license or available as an add-on. Use three or four that answer different questions, then anchor them to a defined level and risk plan.
NinjaTrader 8 ships with a long indicator list, and its marketplace adds thousands more. The useful question is not “which indicator is best?” but “which question does each one answer?” For a platform-agnostic version, see best indicators for futures trading; this page focuses on NinjaTrader names and licensing.
The short list at a glance
| Indicator | Question it answers | NinjaTrader version | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| VWAP | Session fair value; trend vs. mean-reversion context | Standard VWAP; Order Flow VWAP with bands needs Order Flow+ | Treating every VWAP touch as an entry |
| Volume profile | Where volume was accepted or rejected by price (POC, value area) | Order Flow Volume Profile (Order Flow+) | Using profiles built on too little data |
| Cumulative delta | Net aggressive buying vs. selling over time | Order Flow Cumulative Delta (Order Flow+) | Reading delta divergence without a level |
| Volumetric bars (footprint) | Bid/ask volume at each price inside a bar | Order Flow Volumetric Bars (Order Flow+) | Watching every print instead of key areas |
| ATR | Typical range, for stop and target sizing | Standard | Using ATR as a direction signal |
| Prior day OHLC / pivots | Objective reference levels | Standard | Drawing too many levels to act on |
The Order Flow+ names come from NinjaTrader’s Order Flow+ help guide, which also lists Delta Bars, the Market Depth Map, Price on Volume bars and the Trade Detector.
Order Flow+: what you get and who has it
NinjaTrader’s help guide states that Order Flow+ studies are included for lifetime-license users. Others need the Order Flow+ add-on. If you trade through a prop firm, check which license the firm’s NinjaTrader access includes before planning around footprint or delta tools.
Automation has limits too. NinjaTrader support has said on its forum that Order Flow+ indicators cannot be used in Strategy Builder; Cumulative Delta, Volumetric Bars and Order Flow VWAP can be called from hand-coded NinjaScript, while the Market Depth Map, Trade Detector and Volume Profile are not supported there.
VWAP: session context, not an entry signal
VWAP shows the volume-weighted average price for the session. Price holding above a rising VWAP suggests buyers are in control of the day; repeated crosses suggest balance. The Order Flow VWAP adds standard-deviation bands that many traders use to judge stretch.
Use it to choose between trend and mean-reversion setups, not to buy every touch. My VWAP trading strategy guide covers that in detail.
Volume profile: where the market accepted price
A volume profile shows how much traded at each price. The point of control and value area highlight acceptance; low-volume areas often show where price moved quickly. These make objective levels for ES and NQ.
Session and composite profiles answer different questions, so pick the range deliberately. See volume profile trading and POC and value area trading.
Cumulative delta and volumetric bars: reading aggression
Cumulative delta tracks market buys minus market sells over time. Volumetric bars are NinjaTrader’s footprint charts, showing bid and ask volume at each price inside a bar. Together they show whether aggressive traders are pushing through a level or being absorbed at it.
They are most useful at a level you already marked. Watching every print all session leads to overtrading. Learn the concepts in cumulative delta and footprint charts explained. I read the same information in ExoCharts; the idea transfers across platforms.
ATR and reference levels: sizing and structure
ATR measures average range. It tells you whether a 10-point NQ stop is tight or wide for current conditions and helps you size contracts so one loss stays inside your plan. It says nothing about direction.
Prior-day high, low and close, the overnight range and the opening range give objective levels with no settings to tweak. They are free in NinjaTrader and often more useful than another oscillator.
A clean chart template
- Main chart: price, session VWAP and prior-day levels.
- Session or composite volume profile on the side.
- One aggression tool: cumulative delta panel or volumetric bars—not both on a small screen.
- ATR in a small panel or the data box for sizing.
If an indicator hasn’t changed a decision in your journal for a month, remove it. Stacking several momentum oscillators adds no new information.
Indicators don’t replace a plan
Indicators describe what happened; your edge comes from a defined setup, a level and fixed risk. On prop-firm accounts, the risk rules matter more than any study. The evaluation risk plan shows how to size around a drawdown limit.
In SATO VIP I share daily ES and NQ orderflow levels and trade setups based on my own five-year backtesting. That is context; you still decide entries and risk. Backtests do not guarantee future results.

NinjaTrader Indicators FAQ
What are the best NinjaTrader indicators for day trading futures?+
For ES and NQ, a short list covers most needs: VWAP for session value, a volume profile for acceptance areas, cumulative delta or volumetric bars for aggression, ATR for stop sizing and prior-day high/low/close levels. More indicators rarely improve decisions.
Which NinjaTrader indicators need Order Flow+?+
NinjaTrader's help guide lists Order Flow Cumulative Delta, Delta Bars, Market Depth Map, Price on Volume Bars, Trade Detector, Volume Profile, Volumetric Bars and Order Flow VWAP as Order Flow+ studies. They are included for lifetime-license users; others need the Order Flow+ add-on.
Are free NinjaTrader indicators good enough?+
Often, yes. Standard studies such as moving averages, ATR, prior-day OHLC, pivots and the standard volume indicator cover a lot. Order Flow+ adds footprint and delta tools; decide if you will actually use them before paying.
Can I use Order Flow+ indicators in Strategy Builder?+
According to NinjaTrader support, the Order Flow+ indicators and bar types cannot be used in Strategy Builder. Some, like Cumulative Delta, Volumetric Bars and Order Flow VWAP, can be called from hand-coded NinjaScript.
Does Sato use NinjaTrader indicators?+
No. I execute through TradingView connected to Tradovate and read orderflow in ExoCharts. This guide is based on NinjaTrader's documentation and general futures practice, not my daily NinjaTrader use.
How many indicators should I put on a chart?+
Usually three or four, each answering a different question: where value is, who is aggressive, how far price typically moves and where the key reference levels sit. Several indicators measuring the same thing add clutter, not confirmation.
Is VWAP or volume profile better?+
They answer different questions. VWAP gives a volume-weighted average for the session; a volume profile shows where volume traded by price. Many futures traders use both: VWAP for intraday fair value, profile for acceptance and rejection levels.
Are third-party NinjaTrader indicators worth buying?+
Be cautious. Many repackage standard calculations. Ask for a trial, check what the calculation is and test it against your journal. A paid indicator does not replace a defined setup and risk plan.
Do indicators work the same on prop firm accounts?+
The calculations are the same, but data feeds and licensing can differ. Check which NinjaTrader license and data your prop firm provides, especially for Order Flow+ tools.
Do indicators give buy and sell signals?+
Some are presented that way, but none predicts reliably on its own. Treat indicators as context around a level and a setup you have already defined, with risk sized before entry.
