NinjaTrader doesn't pay me for this review. My prop firm partners are FundedNext, Tradeify and Apex. Pricing changes often, so I don't quote it — check NinjaTrader directly.

The short answer

NinjaTrader is a strong all-round futures platform: deep charting, a flexible DOM, a big add-on ecosystem and wide prop firm support. Downsides: Windows-only desktop and a learning curve.

Using NinjaTrader with prop firms

Most futures prop firms let you trade through NinjaTrader, and some include the license with the account. Confirm platform support and data connection before buying an evaluation — my best futures prop firms ranking is a good starting point.

Orderflow on NinjaTrader

NinjaTrader can show volumetric bars, cumulative delta and volume profile, which covers most of what you need to read footprint charts. Tools only show data, though — knowing where to look matters more. My daily ES & NQ orderflow levels share the POCs, value areas and reaction zones I prepare each day, as context rather than trade signals.

Who should use it

  • Windows traders who want deep customization.
  • Prop firm traders whose firm supports it.
  • Traders who want automation via NinjaScript (check firm rules).

NinjaTrader FAQ

Is NinjaTrader good for futures trading?+

Yes. It's one of the most widely used futures platforms, with strong charting, a customizable DOM and a large add-on ecosystem.

Is NinjaTrader free?+

NinjaTrader offers free charting and simulation, with paid license or brokerage options for live trading. Plans and fees change, so check NinjaTrader's current pricing.

Do prop firms support NinjaTrader?+

Many futures prop firms do, often providing the license or connection with the account. Check each firm's current platform list.

Does NinjaTrader work on Mac?+

The desktop platform is Windows-only. Mac users typically use a virtual machine, a Windows cloud PC, or a browser-based platform.

Can NinjaTrader show footprint charts?+

Yes, through its Order Flow+ tools or third-party add-ons. Dedicated orderflow platforms may offer more depth out of the box.

NinjaTrader or Tradovate?+

Same parent company. NinjaTrader desktop is more customizable; Tradovate is simpler and browser-based. See my NinjaTrader vs Tradovate comparison.

Is NinjaTrader good for beginners?+

It's usable, but the depth can feel heavy at first. Start in simulation before trading live or funded capital.

Can I automate strategies in NinjaTrader?+

Yes, NinjaScript (C#) supports custom indicators and strategies. Check your prop firm's rules on automation before using it.
